Carnival Cruise Packing Checklist 2026 — Everything You Need, Nothing You Don’t

Overpacking is one of the most common first-timer mistakes on a Carnival cruise. You’re going to be on a ship — everything you need is either already there or a short port stop away. What you actually need is less than you think, and a few specific things you might not think of at all.

I’m Jerry Robertson — Galveston Cruise Guy, Certified Diamond Carnival travel agent. This is the packing list I use on my own sailings, updated for 2026 and specifically tailored for Galveston departures where most guests are driving, not flying.

BEFORE YOU PACK — TWO RULES

Rule 1: One outfit per port day, one per sea day, two dressy options. That covers most 5 to 7-night sailings without overpacking. Mix and match colors so you’re not doubling up on shoes.

Rule 2: Cabin space is limited. A standard Carnival stateroom runs about 185 square feet. Everything you bring has to fit in drawers, a small closet, and under the bed. Pack with that in mind.

✅ ESSENTIALS — THESE GO IN YOUR CARRY-ON

Never put these in checked luggage. Your checked bags go to porters at the terminal and won’t reach your cabin until late afternoon. These stay with you from home to gangway.

  • Passport or government-issued ID + birth certificate (if not using passport)
  • Boarding pass — printed AND saved on your phone
  • Credit card linked to your Sail & Sign account
  • Small cash for porters, port taxis, and beach club tips ($1s, $5s, $20s)
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Luggage tags — print from your Carnival booking and attach to all checked bags before you arrive
  • Health insurance card
  • Prescription medications — enough for the sailing plus a few extra days
  • Basic first aid (bandages, pain reliever, antacid, anti-diarrheal)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Backpack or tote bag for port days

💡 Galveston Tip: Most Galveston cruisers drive to the port. Pack your carry-on last so it’s fully loaded before you leave home — not assembled in a parking lot.

👗 CLOTHING

Casual wear (mix and match):

  • Casual outfits, sundresses, shorts and tops
  • 2-3 bathing suits + cover-ups — more than one so one can dry while you wear another
  • Flip-flops and sandals for the ship and port
  • Comfortable walking shoes for port days with uneven surfaces
  • Hat or visor + sunglasses
  • Sleepwear and undergarments

For cooler moments:

  • Lightweight jacket or cardigan — ships are air-conditioned and some nights on deck get breezy even in the Caribbean

For elegant nights:

  • 1-2 dressier outfits for Cruise Elegant evenings — no tuxedo required, but a step up from casual
  • Nice dress shoes or heels (optional — many people just wear nicer sandals)

💡 Carnival’s dress code: Jeans and nice shorts are acceptable in the main dining room on most evenings. Cruise Elegant nights call for something dressier — think Sunday best, not black tie. The buffet is always casual regardless of what night it is.

🏖️ BEACH AND POOL

  • Beach bag — large enough for towels, sunscreen, and a water bottle
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — this matters more than most people realize

Carnival asks all guests to use biodegradable sunscreen for beach and pool excursions. It’s not just a suggestion — it’s Carnival’s own policy. Additionally, if you’re going to Chankanaab Park in Cozumel or other protected reef areas, biodegradable sunscreen is specifically required by those destinations. Look for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and “non-nano” particles.

One more note: aerosol sunscreen is in a gray area on Carnival’s prohibited items policy. To avoid any question at security, pack lotion sunscreen rather than aerosol.

  • Aloe vera gel — for sunburns that happen despite your best intentions
  • Waterproof phone pouch — essential for beach days and snorkeling
  • Ship towel — Carnival provides pool towels onboard, but you’ll need to bring your own to beach clubs like Nachi Cocom in Cozumel (they don’t provide them)
  • Snorkel gear (optional) — if you plan to snorkel independently in port. Skip it if you’re booking a Carnival snorkel excursion since gear is typically provided
  • Small binoculars — surprisingly useful for spotting wildlife, watching sail-away, and enjoying scenic ports

🧴 TOILETRIES

Carnival provides basic bar soap, generic shampoo, and body wash in the shower — nothing special. Bring your preferred products.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant and hairbrush
  • Shampoo and conditioner (travel size to save counter space)
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Makeup and remover wipes
  • Lip balm with SPF — lips burn faster than skin and this gets forgotten every time
  • Motion sickness remedies — Dramamine, Bonine, or Sea-Bands. Bring from home; they’re cheaper than onboard prices
  • Laundry bag for dirty clothes — keeps your cabin from becoming a pile by Day 3

⭐ EXTRAS YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU PACKED

These aren’t on most generic packing lists — but they’re the items regular Carnival cruisers bring on every sailing:

Magnetic hooks — Carnival cabin walls are metal. A pack of 6-8 magnetic hooks transforms your storage immediately. Hang towels, hats, lanyards, and bags off the walls instead of piling them on surfaces. Best $10 you’ll spend before you sail.

Over-the-door organizer — A clear pocket organizer on the bathroom door holds toiletries, sunscreen, chargers, and all the small items that would otherwise clutter the counter.

Cruise-approved power strip (no surge protection) — Carnival cabins have very few outlets. A non-surge power strip lets everyone charge devices from one spot. This is confirmed allowed by Carnival — surge protectors are not. Buy one labeled “cruise approved” on Amazon before you leave home.

Portable power bank — For port days when you’ll be away from the ship for hours and your phone is your camera, map, and communication device.

Ziplock bags — Multiple uses: wet swimsuits, snacks from the ship for port days, organizing small items, protecting electronics at the beach.

Reusable shopping bag — For souvenirs from port. Folds flat, takes up no space, saves you from carrying paper bags all day.

Packing cubes — Organize by category before you leave home. Everything drops straight into drawers when you arrive. No refolding, no searching for anything all week.

Nightlight — Cabin bathrooms are pitch dark at night. A small plug-in nightlight prevents 3 AM navigation disasters.

Collapsible laundry bag — Keeps dirty clothes contained and out of sight instead of piling in a corner.

🍷 WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO DRINK

Carnival allows each adult to bring:

  • 1 bottle (750ml) of wine or champagne per adult, in carry-on only
  • Up to 12 cans or cartons (12oz each) of non-alcoholic beverages per person — soda, sparkling water, juice boxes

Beer, liquor, hard seltzers, and additional wine are not allowed. Extra wine found at security is held and returned on the final night of the cruise.

💡 Galveston Rule: CHEERS! does not activate on Day 1 for Galveston sailings. Texas state law means the package kicks in at 6:00 AM on Day 2. Budget for Day 1 drinks separately or bring your wine bottle for embarkation evening.

🚫 WHAT NOT TO PACK

A few items that get confiscated at the Galveston terminal regularly:

  • Power strips WITH surge protection — will be confiscated at security
  • CBD products of any kind — prohibited under federal maritime law
  • Candles or incense — fire hazard, not allowed
  • Clothes irons or steamers — not allowed (ship has laundry services)
  • Drones — must be declared at check-in and held by security; can only be used in port with permission
  • Large Bluetooth speakers or boom boxes — prohibited; small personal speakers allowed in cabin only
  • Beer, liquor, or more than one bottle of wine per adult

📦 PACKING STRATEGY FOR GALVESTON DRIVERS

Since most Galveston cruisers drive rather than fly, you have more flexibility than airline passengers — but it’s still worth packing smart:

Use soft-sided luggage. Hard-shell suitcases don’t slide under the bed as easily. A soft duffel bag fits better in the cabin’s under-bed storage.

Pack your carry-on last, at home. Everything you need for the first several hours onboard — swimsuit, medications, boarding documents, wine — goes in the carry-on. Pack it deliberately at home, not rushed in a parking garage.

Don’t pack for “just in case.” You’re going on a ship, not into the wilderness. Forgot something? The ship has a small shop, ports have pharmacies, and you can order almost anything through room service or at the next port.

Label everything. Luggage tags from your Carnival booking go on all checked bags before you arrive at the terminal. Your carry-on should have a label with your name and contact number too.
