Cozumel Cruise Port Guide 2026 — Everything You Need for a Great Port Day

Cozumel is the most visited cruise port in the Caribbean — and for good reason. Crystal clear water, world-class reefs, beach clubs for every personality, and a downtown full of genuine Mexican food and good tequila.

It’s also a port where a little preparation makes a real difference. The right beach club books out fast. Knowing which pier your ship docks at changes how your morning starts. And with 6 to 10 ships sometimes in port at once, getting off the ship early isn’t just a preference — it’s a strategy.

THE PIERS — WHICH ONE YOUR CARNIVAL SHIP USES

Cozumel has three cruise piers, all on the western (calm) side of the island. Which pier your ship uses matters for how your morning starts.

Puerta Maya — Carnival’s Home Pier

Puerta Maya is Carnival’s dedicated terminal in Cozumel, built by Carnival Corporation and primarily used by Carnival ships. It’s the largest, most modern terminal on the island with a shopping complex, restaurants, bars, and beach access right at the pier.

Key details:

  • Located about 5 miles south of downtown San Miguel
  • Self-contained resort-style complex — you can spend the day here without leaving
  • Taxi to downtown: $8-12 USD, about 10-15 minutes
  • Most independent tour operators offer free pickup directly at Puerta Maya

Punta Langosta — Downtown Pier

Punta Langosta sits right in the middle of downtown San Miguel — step off the ship and you’re walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the waterfront promenade. Primarily used by Norwegian, Disney, and MSC.

International Pier (SSA/TMM)

Located just north of Puerta Maya. Handles Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, and overflow from other lines. Similar taxi distance to downtown as Puerta Maya.

💡 Important: Pier assignments can change based on ship size, schedule, and port traffic. Always check the Carnival HUB app or your daily Fun Times newsletter the night before your Cozumel port day to confirm where you’re docking.

BEACH CLUBS — PICK YOUR VIBE

Cozumel’s beach clubs are the highlight for most cruise passengers. Here are the three I recommend, one for each type of day.

Nachi Cocom — Calm and Adults-Only ⭐ Jerry’s Personal Pick

The vibe: Quiet, relaxed, genuinely exclusive. No loud music, no party crowd, no chaos.

Nachi Cocom caps visits at 130 guests per day — that’s it. On a day when 8 ships are in port, you’re still in a serene adults-oriented environment with a sandy beach, a pool, attentive waitstaff, an open bar, and a four-course lunch all included.

This is my personal pick and the beach club I book on every Cozumel sailing. I have the sea turtle release excursion booked for my July 4th sailing in Cozumel, and when I’m back on the beach in the afternoon, it’s Nachi Cocom.

What’s included: Open bar (beer, wine, cocktails, sodas, water), four-course lunch, beach and pool access, lounge chairs.

What to know:

  • Book online in advance — 130 guests per day fills up fast when multiple ships are in port
  • Not part of Carnival’s organized shore excursions — book directly and arrange your own taxi
  • Taxi from Puerta Maya: about $8-12 USD, 10-15 minutes
  • Bring your ship towel — Nachi Cocom doesn’t provide them

Best for: Couples, solo travelers, anyone who wants a genuinely relaxing day without crowds or a party atmosphere.

Mr. Sancho’s — Party Vibe and High Energy

The vibe: Loud music, cold drinks, three pools, a swim-up bar, and a crowd that’s there to have a great time.

Mr. Sancho’s is Cozumel’s most popular beach club and the one most associated with a fun, high-energy day. All-inclusive means food and drinks are covered from the moment you arrive. The staff is consistently praised for attentive, friendly service even on busy days.

What’s included: All-you-can-eat buffet, open bar (cocktails, beer, soft drinks, water), pool access, beach chairs, hammocks, lounge chairs.

Add-on activities available: Jet skis, parasailing, horseback riding, ATV tours, massages, snorkel gear rental.

What to know:

  • Books out quickly — reserve well before your sailing date
  • Closed Sundays — confirm your port day falls Monday-Saturday
  • Taxi from Puerta Maya: about $20 USD for up to 4 people one way
  • Bring your ship towel — towel rental is $5 with a deposit
  • Not included: shots, Starbucks products, aquatic park access

Best for: Groups, parties, anyone who wants a lively all-day beach experience with activities and energy.

Chankanaab Park — Best for Families

The vibe: All-in-one family destination — snorkeling, dolphin encounters, beach, pools, botanical gardens, and plenty for kids of all ages.

Chankanaab is Cozumel’s most comprehensive family-friendly attraction. Unlike the pure beach clubs, it combines nature, activities, and beach in one location. The snorkeling off the beach is accessible for beginners, and the dolphin encounter is a highlight for families with kids.

What’s included with day pass: Beach access, snorkeling area, pools, botanical garden, archaeological park, and select activities.

Add-on options: Dolphin encounter, sea lion encounter, manatee experience, SNUBA diving, scuba lessons.

What to know:

  • Book excursion through Carnival’s shore excursions for the ship-wait guarantee
  • If your dolphin encounter runs long, Carnival’s excursion protects you from missing sailaway
  • Taxi from Puerta Maya: approximately $8-12 USD

Best for: Families with children of any age, first-time snorkelers, anyone who wants activities and beach combined.

OTHER TOP THINGS TO DO

Snorkeling the Reefs

Cozumel has some of the best reef snorkeling in the Western Hemisphere. The top spots are:

  • El Cielo — shallow, crystal-clear water with starfish scattered across a sandy bottom. Perfect for beginners and families.
  • Palancar Reef — world-famous for its coral formations and marine life. Slightly deeper.
  • Columbia Reef — large reef system with excellent visibility.

Most catamaran snorkel tours stop at two or three spots in one excursion. Book through Carnival shore excursions for the ship-wait guarantee, or book through a reputable independent operator if you prefer a smaller group.

Save a Sea Turtle

This is a seasonal excursion available roughly late July through early November during nesting season. Carnival offers it as a shore excursion and it’s one of the most meaningful things I’ve done in any port.

You join a local conservation team, help release baby sea turtles into the Caribbean, and learn about the ongoing protection efforts on the island. It’s heartwarming, it supports real conservation, and it books out fast during peak season.

Book through Carnival shore excursions. The ship-wait guarantee matters here — you don’t want to miss sailaway on an emotional excursion.

Downtown San Miguel

If you dock at Puerta Maya, a quick $8-12 taxi ride gets you to downtown — or walk if you’re at Punta Langosta.

Downtown is worth a few hours for:

  • Shopping: silver jewelry, vanilla, tequila, local crafts
  • Authentic restaurants away from the pier tourist traps
  • The waterfront Malecón (promenade) — walk it for views and people-watching
  • The main plaza for an authentic Mexican town center experience

💡 TIP: Walk 1-2 blocks inland from the waterfront for the best food prices and most authentic experience. The first row of shops closest to the pier are priced for tourists.

TRANSPORTATION

Taxis

Cozumel taxis use a fixed government rate system — no meters, no negotiating. Rates are posted at each pier exit.

  • Downtown from Puerta Maya: $8-12 USD for up to 4 passengers
  • Beaches/beach clubs: $12-20 USD depending on distance
  • Ask the price before getting in — it’s expected

Taxis fit 4 passengers at the same flat rate. If you’re a larger group, a larger taxi is the same per-trip price. Stick to the official taxi queue at the pier exit — not drivers who approach you unsolicited on the street.

Rentals

Jeeps, scooters, and golf carts are available near the piers. Only recommended for experienced drivers who are comfortable on island roads. Scooters especially carry risk and are not recommended for first-timers.

FOOD TO TRY IN PORT

If you venture downtown or to a local restaurant, don’t miss:

  • Fresh seafood — caught the same morning
  • Fish tacos — the real thing, not cruise ship versions
  • Guacamole made tableside
  • Mexican street tacos
  • Coconut shrimp
  • Margaritas made with real lime juice

The beach clubs all include food in their all-inclusive price, so most passengers eat at the club. If you’re doing a half-day excursion and spending time downtown, budget $10-20 USD per person for a genuine local lunch.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE — PLAYA MIA IS CLOSED

Your older guides or other websites may recommend Playa Mia Grand Beach Park as a Cozumel beach option. As of May 2025, Playa Mia has closed and rebranded as “Isla Mia” — a transitional operation with significantly reduced amenities while the site transitions to Royal Caribbean’s new Royal Beach Club Cozumel development. The waterslides and most signature attractions that made Playa Mia popular are no longer operating.

Do not book Playa Mia or Isla Mia for your port day. Stick with Nachi Cocom, Mr. Sancho’s, or Chankanaab depending on your vibe.

SAFETY

Cozumel is consistently one of the safer cruise ports in the Caribbean. Standard precautions apply:

  • Use official taxis from the pier queue only
  • Watch your belongings in crowded areas and downtown
  • Drink responsibly — Caribbean drinks are often stronger than they taste, and the sun adds to it
  • Return to the ship at least 60-90 minutes before all-aboard time
  • If you take an independent tour (not through Carnival), build in extra return buffer — the ship won’t wait for independent excursions

BUSY PORT DAY TIPS

Cozumel regularly sees 6 to 10 ships in port on the same day. On those days:

  • Get off the ship early — the pier taxis and popular beach clubs fill up
  • Book your beach club or excursion in advance — don’t assume you can walk up
  • At beach clubs, arriving by 9-10 AM gets you the best chair placement
  • Return to the ship early on busy days — tender queues (if applicable) get long
