Shore Excursions
Save 50%+ on port activities by booking independently. My complete guide to ship vs. independent excursions, best operators, and what’s actually worth your money.
The Shore Excursion Decision: Ship vs. Independent
This is the #1 question I get about cruising: should you book excursions through the ship or go independent? The answer isn’t always the same, and it depends on the port, the activity, and your comfort level. After 7 cruises and dozens of excursions, I’ve learned exactly when to book with the ship and when to save your money by going independent. Here’s everything you need to know.
Ship Excursions vs. Independent: The Honest Comparison
Ship Excursions
- Ship Waits for You: If your excursion runs late, the ship will wait. This is the biggest selling point and only applies to ship-booked tours.
- Convenient: Book online before cruise, meet at designated area, everything organized for you.
- English-Speaking Guides: Carnival vets tour operators and ensures English-fluent guides.
- Quality Control: Tours are vetted by the cruise line, consistent experience expected.
- Expensive: Typically 50-100% more than booking the same tour independently.
- Large Groups: Often 30-50 people on a bus. Less personal, more rushed.
- Less Flexible: Fixed schedule, can’t customize, limited time at each stop.
- Tourist Traps: Some tours include shopping stops with commission kickbacks.
Independent Excursions
- Save 50-70%: Same activities, half the price or less. Huge savings for families.
- Smaller Groups: 6-12 people typically. More personalized, less time waiting.
- More Flexible: Customize timing, skip tourist traps, spend more time where you want.
- Support Local: Money goes to local operators, not cruise line middlemen.
- Ship Won’t Wait: If you’re late getting back, you’re on your own. Must manage timing carefully.
- Requires Research: You book in advance, coordinate meeting points, handle logistics.
- Payment Up Front: Usually need to pay via PayPal or credit card before cruise.
When to Book Ship vs. Independent
✅ Book SHIP Excursions For:
Complex Logistics: Belize cave tubing, Grand Cayman Stingray City, or any tour requiring boats, multiple transfers, or remote locations. The convenience and guarantee the ship waits is worth the premium.
✅ Book SHIP Excursions For:
First-Time Cruisers: If you’re nervous about logistics or worried about timing, ship excursions provide peace of mind. Worth the extra cost for your first cruise.
✅ Book SHIP Excursions For:
Tight Port Schedules: If you only have 6-7 hours in port and want to maximize time without stress about getting back.
✅ Book INDEPENDENT For:
Beach Days: Cozumel beach clubs, Roatan West Bay Beach, Costa Maya beaches. Super easy, massive savings ($50 vs $90-120), better experience.
✅ Book INDEPENDENT For:
Snorkeling/Diving: Cozumel snorkeling with Aldora Divers or similar. Smaller boats, better reef sites, half the price.
✅ Book INDEPENDENT For:
City Exploration: Walking around Cozumel downtown, Nassau, any port where you can walk off the ship and explore. Free or cheap taxis.
✅ Book INDEPENDENT For:
Experienced Cruisers: If you’ve cruised before and are comfortable with timing/logistics, independent saves you hundreds per cruise.

💡 Jerry’s Shore Excursion Strategy
Research Before You Cruise: Don’t wait until you’re onboard to figure out excursions. Research and book 2-4 weeks before departure.
Have a Backup Plan: Weather can cancel tours. Know what you’ll do if your planned excursion is called off.
Bring Cash for Tips: Tour guides, taxi drivers, and boat captains appreciate $5-10 tips for good service.
Set Phone Alarms: Set an alarm for 60 minutes before “all aboard” time. Never rely on tour operators to get you back on time.
Screenshot Everything: Save confirmation emails, tour operator contact info, and meeting instructions as screenshots. WiFi is unreliable in ports.
Waterproof Phone Case: Best $15 you’ll spend. Protect your phone during water activities and have it for photos/emergencies.
⚠️ Critical Timing Warning
The ship WILL leave without you if you’re late. This is not negotiable. If you book independent excursions, YOU are responsible for getting back on time.
Always be back 30-60 minutes before “all aboard” time. Don’t cut it close. Build in buffer time for traffic, taxi waits, or unexpected delays.
Sync your watch to ship time (announced daily in Fun Times). Your phone might show different time zones. Go by ship time only.
Common Excursion Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking last-minute onboard: Ship excursions are more expensive onboard than if you book online before the cruise. Independent tours may be sold out.
- Not reading reviews: Some independent operators are sketchy. Always read recent reviews (within 6 months) on TripAdvisor, Viator, or Google.
- Forgetting about gratuity: Tour guides expect tips (15-20%). Factor this into your budget when comparing ship vs independent pricing.
- Over-scheduling port days: Don’t book a full-day tour in every port. You’ll burn out. Mix active days with beach relaxation or staying on the ship.
- Not bringing sunscreen: It’s expensive in ports ($20-30). Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen from home.
- Wearing new shoes: Break in walking shoes before your cruise. Nothing ruins a shore day like blisters from new sandals.
- Bringing valuables to the beach: Leave jewelry, expensive watches, and extra cash on the ship. Bring only what you need.
- Not confirming meeting points: Know exactly where to meet your tour. “At the port” isn’t specific enough—which building? Which side?
