The Alchemy Bar has been on Carnival ships since 2012 and remains the most distinctive bar concept in the fleet. It’s not a poolside frozen drink stand, not a generic ship bar with an island motif, and not just another place to order a rum and Coke. It’s a craft cocktail bar with a specific identity and a level of bartending that most cruisers don’t expect to find at sea.
The concept
The Alchemy Bar is designed to look like a vintage pharmacy, specifically a 19th-century apothecary. Behind the bar, you’ll find glass jars, corked bottles, antique wooden drawers, hardback books, and phrenology models arranged as décor. The bartenders wear white lab coats and are trained as dedicated mixologists, not generalists who rotate between all the bars on the ship. Only a specific group of crew members is trained for this venue, which keeps the craft consistent but also means the bar can get backed up at peak times since fewer hands are working it.
The cocktail menu is formatted like a prescription pad, and drinks are organized into themed sections with names like Passion Potions, Energizing Elixirs, Fountain of Youth, Relief for What Ails, Cocktail Therapy, and The Medicine Cabinet. The drink names lean into the pharmacy concept: remedies, elixirs, tonics. It reads as gimmicky on paper and works completely in person.
Which ships have it
The Alchemy Bar is available on most of the Carnival fleet, currently confirmed on Breeze, Celebration, Conquest, Dream, Elation, Freedom, Glory, Horizon, Jubilee, Legend, Liberty, Luminosa, Magic, Miracle, Panorama, Pride, Radiance, Spirit, Splendor, Sunrise, Sunshine, Valor, Vista, and Mardi Gras. On the Carnival Venezia and Firenze, the Alchemy Bar is replaced by the Amari Bar, which focuses on Italian spirits rather than the apothecary theme. The Carnival Paradise does not have an Alchemy Bar.
On the Breeze, it’s located on Deck 5 alongside the rest of the Promenade entertainment cluster. On the Jubilee, it sits on Deck 7 near Fahrenheit 555 and the Grand Central atrium. Either location naturally fits into an evening entertainment flow, which is part of why it gets busy around the pre-dinner window.
What things cost
Alcoholic cocktails run $14.25 each, with an automatic 20% gratuity added. Zero-proof versions of the cocktails are $10.25, also with gratuity. The CHEERS beverage package covers alcoholic cocktails at the Alchemy Bar, and the Zero Proof CHEERS package covers the non-alcoholic versions. If you’re on CHEERS, this bar should be one of your regular stops, since the cocktail quality is genuinely high for what you’d pay at an equivalent craft bar on land.
For Galveston-specific context: due to Texas’s dry-state laws, any alcohol purchased through the Fun Shops onboard is held for delivery to your stateroom starting on Day 2 of the sailing. What to order
Cucumber Sunrise is the most consistently recommended drink on the menu across years of cruiser feedback. It’s made with Belvedere vodka, fresh lime juice, watermelon syrup, orange juice, and muddled cucumber wheels. Light, refreshing, and genuinely good. The Quick Fix is the high-octane option: vodka, gin, rum, Midori liqueur, absinthe, and Sprite. Stronger than it reads and surprisingly drinkable.
Martini Seduction combines Grey Goose L’Orange Vodka, red passion fruit nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice, and a hint of orange. One of the most popular from the Passion Potions section.
Island Old Fashioned is the Alchemy Bar’s Caribbean take on the classic, made with spiced-infused Bacardi 8 Rum instead of bourbon or rye. A good choice if you prefer a stirred drink over something fresh and citrusy.
If nothing on the menu fits what you want, describe your flavor preferences to the bartender and ask for a prescription. This is explicitly what the concept is built around, and the mixologists are trained to execute custom cocktails on the spot based on what you describe. Prefer something smoky, or something citrusy and not sweet, or something that tastes like a dessert? Tell them. It’s more interesting than ordering off the menu every time.
One thing the Alchemy Bar deliberately does not do: serve frozen drinks or sodas. If you want a piña colada or a rum and Coke, the RedFrog Rum Bar or BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the right stop. The Alchemy Bar is a fresh-juice, botanical, craft-cocktail venue, and keeping that lane narrow is part of why the quality holds. I like the Pink Potion.
When to go
The bar gets its busiest in the pre-dinner window on sea days, roughly 5 to 7 pm, when guests are dressing for dinner and looking for a cocktail before they sit down. If your goal is maximum flexibility with the bartender’s attention, earlier in the afternoon or later in the evening, after the dinner rush, tends to give you a better experience. On sea days when the Alchemy Bar is near the evening entertainment flow, you may find the line backed up significantly between shows.
Because only a limited number of bartenders are trained at this venue, waits during peak windows can be noticeably longer than at other bars on the ship. Factor that into your evening timeline if you have a dinner reservation or show time coming up.
Whether CHEERS is worth it partly depends on this bar
