Top 7 Mistakes New Carnival Cruisers Make

Every one of these is avoidable. Read this before you board.

First-time cruisers make the same mistakes on every sailing. Not because they’re careless, they just didn’t know. That’s what this list is for.

These seven mistakes collectively cost people money, missed experiences, and genuine regret. All of them are completely avoidable once you know to watch for them.

I’m Jerry Robertson — Galveston Cruise Guy and Certified Diamond Carnival travel agent. Here’s what to avoid.

MISTAKE 1: EATING ONLY AT THE BUFFET

The Lido buffet is convenient, and it’s always there. That’s exactly why first-timers default to it for every meal.

What most first-timers don’t realize: the main dining room is included in your cruise fare, and it’s a completely different experience. Multi-course meal. Real table service. A waiter who learns your name. An actual menu that changes every night. It’s not a slightly better buffet; it’s a sit-down restaurant you’ve already paid for.

The MDR breakfast is the most underused free meal on the ship. It’s calmer, better, and almost always faster than fighting the buffet crowd on a sea day morning.

✅ THE FIX: Try the main dining room at least once for dinner and once for breakfast. You’ll do it every night after that.

MISTAKE 2: LEAVING YOUR PHONE ON ROAMING

This one costs people real money on every single sailing. It catches first-timers more than almost anything else.

The moment your ship reaches international waters, typically within an hour of leaving Galveston, a maritime satellite network called Cellular at Sea activates. Your phone connects to it automatically, just as it connects to a cell tower at home. The difference: maritime roaming rates run $3–$5 per minute for voice calls and extremely high rates for data. One background app refreshing in your pocket can cost $50 or more before you notice.

Your unlimited data plan does not apply. International day passes do not cover maritime networks. If your phone is on and cellular is enabled, you’re on the meter.

✅ THE FIX: Put your phone on Airplane Mode as soon as you board. Then turn Wi-Fi back on  you can still use the ship’s Wi-Fi network, the HUB app, WhatsApp, and everything else without cellular charges.

If you need to stay connected: Verizon offers a Cruise Pass add-on that works on Carnival ships. AT&T has similar options. Check with your carrier before you sail — cruise-specific add-ons are far cheaper than paying per-minute maritime roaming rates. But for most cruisers, Airplane Mode + ship Wi-Fi is the right answer.

MISTAKE 3: SPENDING SEA DAYS STUCK IN THE CABIN

New cruisers often treat sea days like hotel days sleep in, watch TV, rest. That’s a real waste of one of the best parts of the trip.

Sea days are when the cruise actually happens. Trivia games where you end up with a team of strangers who become friends. Cooking contests, deck parties, live music, comedy shows, spa deals at port-day prices. The pool is at its most crowded but the Serenity deck has space. Every sea day has a full schedule of included events that most first-timers never find because they don’t look.

You paid for all of it. It’s all already included.

✅ THE FIX: Open the Carnival HUB app the night before each sea day and plan it like a port day. Pick two or three things you want to do. Show up. The rest takes care of itself.

MISTAKE 4: BEING LATE BACK TO THE SHIP

The ship will leave without you. This is not a cruise line threat. It happens on every sailing somewhere in the world, and it will keep happening.

Ports operate on the ship’s schedule. Not on your excursion guide’s optimistic estimate. Not on your watch, which may be showing the wrong time zone. Not on the cab driver’s confidence. All-aboard time is the hard deadline, and there is no negotiating it.

Missing the ship means booking your own flights to the next port, paying for your own hotel, and getting yourself there at your own expense. Carnival will not cover those costs. And if you’re on an independent excursion not a Carnival-sponsored one the ship will not wait for you.

✅ THE FIX: Set two alarms. Aim to be back at the ship 30 minutes before all-aboard time, not right at it. The only excursion that guarantees the ship waits is a Carnival-sponsored one with the ship-wait guarantee.

MISTAKE 5: NOT CHECKING THE ONBOARD ACCOUNT

Charges add up faster than people expect. Small purchases here, a round of drinks there, an excursion deposit, a spa treatment and then someone is surprised by a $600 final bill they thought was $300.

Errors also happen. Duplicate charges, misapplied gratuities, items you didn’t order — all of these are easy to fix mid-cruise when you can walk to Guest Services and sort it out quickly. They’re significantly harder to dispute after you’ve disembarked.

Most new cruisers don’t look at their account until the last night. By then, the Guest Services line wraps around the atrium, and nobody is happy.

✅ THE FIX: Open the Carnival HUB app each evening and review that day’s charges. Takes 30 seconds. Catches problems early. Prevents final-night surprises.

MISTAKE 6: SKIPPING THE ENTERTAINMENT

New cruisers often head back to the cabin after dinner tired, full, and perfectly happy to call it a night. Perfectly understandable. Also the reason they come home saying “I wish I’d seen more.”

The comedy shows, live piano bar music, main stage productions, deck parties, and karaoke, all of it is included. The Punchliner comedy club late show is genuinely funny. The piano bar at 9 PM is packed with strangers becoming friends over shared song requests. The 80’s Rock-N-Glow party is the best deck party you’ve ever seen.

You can always go to bed. You can’t rewind the cruise.

✅ THE FIX: Pick one show or event per evening. You don’t have to stay out late just show up for one thing. That’s usually all it takes before the night has a life of its own.

MISTAKE 7: SPENDING THE LAST NIGHT ONLY PACKING

The last night of a cruise has its own gravitational pull toward packing anxiety. Bags have to go out in the hallway by 10-11 PM people know this and somehow it becomes the only thing they think about all evening.

The final dinner is eaten in a rush. The last evening at the piano bar doesn’t happen. The group of people you’ve spent a whole week with drifts off to their cabins one by one because everyone’s “packing.” And then it’s over, and you’re standing in the port parking lot thinking about what you missed.

Pack before dinner. All of it. Bags in the hallway, done. After that, the evening is yours.

✅ THE FIX: Pack everything before your final dinner. Then go enjoy your last night exactly as you would have enjoyed the first.
